Group Training Scheme (GTS) vs Direct Indenture

Apprenticeships & Traineeships: Your Pathways to a Career

Thinking about starting an apprenticeship or traineeship? That's a fantastic way to learn a trade or skill on the job while getting paid! When it comes to how you're employed, there are two main ways this can work: a Group Training Scheme or a Direct Indenture.

What's a Group Training Scheme (GTS)?

Imagine a big employer who helps many smaller businesses take on apprentices and trainees. That's essentially what a Group Training Scheme is!

  • Your Employer: When you're with a GTS, the Group Training Organisation (GTO) is actually your employer. They take care of all the behind-the-scenes stuff like your wages, superannuation, workers' compensation, and making sure your training is on track.
  • Host Businesses: The GTO then places you with different businesses, called 'host businesses,' where you'll do your on-the-job training. You might work with one host for your whole apprenticeship, or you could move between a few different ones. This can be great for gaining diverse experience!
  • Support & Guidance: GTOs provide excellent support. They have dedicated field officers who check in on you regularly, help with any issues that come up with your host employer or your training provider (like TAFE SA), and ensure you're getting the best possible learning experience.
  • Security: If things change with your host business (for example, if they slow down), the GTO will often work hard to find you a new host, giving you more job security.

What's a Direct Indenture?

A direct indenture is a more traditional way of starting an apprenticeship or traineeship.

  • Your Employer: With a direct indenture, the business you work for directly employs you. This means they're responsible for your wages, conditions, and making sure your training is delivered.
  • Direct Relationship: You have a direct, one-on-one employment relationship with that single employer for the duration of your apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • Hands-on with One Business: You'll spend all your on-the-job training learning the specific practices and culture of that one business. This can lead to a very deep understanding of their operations.

Which is Right for You?

Both Group Training Schemes and Direct Indentures are excellent ways to get qualified and kickstart your career.

  • A Group Training Scheme offers a lot of support, potentially diverse work experiences, and a bit more security if a host arrangement changes.
  • A Direct Indenture offers a consistent experience with one employer and can lead to a very close working relationship within that single business.

When you're looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship, it's worth considering which employment model best suits your needs and learning style!
